Yes, it is an interesting thought - to give, rather than receive. I think that is how people really celebrated birthdays in India, in the olden days. They went to the temple and gave gifts to god. They gave charity to the needy people. Etc. It is a Western culture to blow out candles and receive gifts on b'days.
